Silk Mill

Petaluma, California

The Project

Originally built in 1892 by the Calson-Currier Silk Milk Co, the Petaluma Silk Mill was home to the largest silk mill west of the Mississippi River.

The iconic structure was first used as a silk manufacturing plant along Petaluma's old waterfront and rightfully earned it's spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Today, this 131 year old, beautifully restored brick building on Lakeville Street is the sole remaining industrial-era brick mill building in the Bay Area. Arris has since had the pleasure of adapting this prominent architectural landmark into a Hampton Inn Hotel by Hilton, and add a new guestroom building to this historic property. This new addition has been designed to honor and respect the historic brick mill and dye house structures with great care taken toward preserving a historic landmark canary palm tree, using full glass at circulation areas to create viewing moments across the facade.

Demolition and modifications were kept to a minimum in order to retain and expose as much of the historic fabric of the existing building as possible. The goal was to create a lasting legacy that will be a benefit, not only to the guests of the hotel, but to the whole community.
