Eugene Residence

Eugene, Oregon

The Project

Set in a quiet Eugene neighborhood, this custom remodel transforms a modest 1950s two bedroom home into a four bedroom residence with two new ensuite bedrooms added to the rear wing. The project balances preservation and transformation, reimagining the home for modern family life while softly celebrating some of its original mid-century style.

The redesign was guided by four goals: updating the home with a soft mid-century modern aesthetic while retaining its original character, strengthening the front entry, adding private bedroom suites for the new owners, and expanding outdoor living spaces. Key original elements including exposed roof beams, wood ceilings, low sloped gable roofs, and the home’s inward relationship to the back patio informed the new design.

On the exterior, shou sugi ban rainscreen siding replaces the original lap siding for durability and graceful aging in Eugene’s rainy climate. A new gabled entry roof, low concrete patio walls, and a custom handmade sapele wood door define the entrance, while the charred wood siding continues inside the foyer to create a seamless transition. The existing brick fireplace was preserved and the open living concept maintained. New nana wall doors were added to strengthen the connection to the expanded patio while a new flat roof extends over the patio, allowing year round outdoor use.

Inside, a warm material palette of walnut cabinetry, light wood herringbone floors, black steel accents, playful wallpaper, and textured Heath tile creates a layered interior that feels modern, handcrafted, and grounded in the home’s original identity.
